Saturday dawned quiet and cold, yet full of promise. Although a non-working day for most — a small pause in the week — it did not mean rest for those heading to Ledići that morning. For them, it meant only one thing: another day devoted to children who find the greatest joy in the simplest things — a warm home, people who care for them, and the chance to feel they belong.

A group of children from the Home for children without parental care Sarajevo (Bjelave Home) arrived at the Small family home in Ledići, together with little ones from three small family homes — in Marijin Dvor, Blagovac, and Sokolović Kolonija. They were brought by Semir Šljivo, the Home’s driver, and the moment they stepped inside, they were wrapped in that familiar warmth that only this place on Bjelašnica can offer. Waiting for them was Belma Mujezinović, Director of Foundation Second, who had prepared everything needed for the day to unfold in a safe, comfortable, and truly homelike environment.

Breakfast smelled like childhood: homemade cheese, smoked meat, and fresh milk purchased from a hardworking local villager who raises sheep, goats, and cows. And instead of sweets, they were served a healthy choice — fresh and dried fruit paired with crunchy, fragrant seeds. Semir stayed with the children, cutting cheese and smoked meat, heating the milk, and helping at the table. The older girls naturally stepped into the role of big sisters — setting the table and caring for the younger ones, filling the house with that gentle warmth of togetherness.

Not long after breakfast, the Home’s director, Muhamed Musić, arrived with his wife Emsada and their children — three daughters and a son. They came just in time to help with lunch preparations and to spend time with the children before the planned walk. The kitchen quickly turned into a lively, warm space full of laughter and teamwork. Merjem, Halima, and Amina took charge of tidying up, making pancakes, and baking potatoes. Emsada, a professional chef, prepared the main meal together with Belma, while the director sat with the children, encouraging them to try the healthy pumpkin, carrot, and red lentil soup.

Once everyone had eaten, the children bundled up and together headed toward the nearby hill. There wasn’t much snow — it had melted quickly in recent days — but just enough remained to make small sledding tracks, a few snowballs, and the occasional Snowman. Children’s laughter echoed through the village, and in Ledići it’s always like that: even a little snow becomes magic when children arrive.

The beauty of the day was deepened by the presence of local animals, as the village of Ledići is known for its many cats and friendly village dogs who sense the moment the house is full of children. As soon as they hear voices, they gather at the door, quietly waiting for affection. The children welcomed them with delight. One gentle cat even walked inside — she stayed the whole day, following the children, cuddling beside them, acting as if she had always been part of their little community.

After playing in the snow, the children returned to the warm house where peaceful afternoon rest awaited them. Each child took a plush toy, found a cozy spot in the upstairs rooms, and drifted into sleep. The cat curled up among them in a tiny “house” they made and decorated with toys. They stroked her gently, and some fell asleep with a hand resting on her small body, as if she were guarding their dreams.

In the evening, a light dinner was served, and the atmosphere was exactly the kind Ledići always bring: quiet, homelike, safe. The children were tired, their eyes heavy, yet none of them wanted to leave. They begged to stay a little longer, to play a bit more, to pet the cat once again, to extend a day that had been far more than an outing — it had been a feeling of home.

Only when the day had completely sunk into night did they set off back toward Sarajevo. In the van, there was that soft, gentle tiredness that says a day has fulfilled every measure of joy and belonging.

“Will we come again tomorrow?” they asked before stepping out of the van.

That question was the answer to everything.
To the effort of the adults.
To the warmth of the house.
To the value of a day invested in children’s smiles.
And the proof that this Saturday in Ledići became far more than an outing — it became a memory of love, safety, and a small place that means everything to them.
