Selvedin is a 44-year-old man with special needs. He resides in the village of Osanica in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he lives with his elderly and frail parents. His mother, aged 75, lost her sight due to diabetes, and three of her toes have been amputated. She finds her way to her son's room by holding onto the wall. And in the evenings, she comes to tuck him in ...

The father struggles to walk. He is 81 years old, burdened with the responsibility of caring for the others. He provides for them, cooks and bakes bread, because his limited mobility confines him to the house. Even if he were to go out, the village store is too far away.

The Scent of Freshly Baked Bread

When representatives from the Foundation "Second" visited them for the first time in December 2022, the aroma of freshly baked bread filled the unfinished house. Bread baked in a wood-burning stove, the wood chopped by this man himself, as his son cannot help even with that.

"I used to be a cook in the army, so I learned a lot," he explained.

They received food and hygiene packages several times, and during the last visit, representatives from the Foundation "Second" asked this caring mother if there was anything she would like them to bring to make things easier...

"Alhamdulillah for everything, I don't need anything... Just maybe, a bed," she whispered as she held Belma Mujezinović's hand, the director of the Foundation "Second".

She slept on a hard, sagging bed, while her husband on an old corner sofa. They provided the best they could for their son. A wooden bed with a good mattress. As for them, they made do with what they had.

The Powder Pink Color

Not much time passed since the visit in July of this year. The Foundation "Second" was contacted by S.H. who wanted to make a significant donation for his sister and brother-in-law. They purchased a bed from the "Inowest" furniture store in Goražde, and the factory "Moj San" in Kiseljak sent a new mattress topper and three pillows for the whole family.

"Dear Allah, this is so comfortable," was her first reaction when she tried the bed they had chosen for her.

The powder pink color matched her wrinkled hands with translucent skin, which she now uses instead of eyes.

"May Allah grant you all goodness. To everyone. Amen," she blessed each one.

We may not know what it is like to carry our old bones, to live in darkness, but we can certainly do everything in our power to ease their burdens. And, God willing, we will reach their age, and it will be heartwarming for someone to visit and help us...

To hold our hand.

We thank the donors who were part of this beautiful story, and we invite you to join us, to help us make more stories like this.
