On their way back from a one-day visit to Srebrenica and Tuzla, a group of children from the Cantonal public institution "Home for children without parental care" Sarajevo experienced an emotional and unexpected moment that, without a doubt, left a profound mark on everyone who set out on this journey last Sunday.
Namely, due to unforeseen circumstances and the fact that the previously arranged lunch venue was unable to accommodate the group, the road led them to Živinice. There, on the suggestion of the Home’s director, Muhamed Musić, they decided to take a break at Cafe-Slastičarna Parlament, renowned for having the best pancakes in the region. While the adults enjoyed savory pancakes, the children opted for pizzas, but everyone ultimately indulged in sweet pancakes, which, according to both the children and adults, became the highlight of the day. Laughter, conversations, and a shared meal revived their energy after an emotionally demanding day.
However, it was only later that they realized this unplanned stop wasn’t a coincidence. It turned out that in Živinice, nearby, is the grave of the parents of one of the boys in the group — a boy who lost both his parents in a car accident. His quiet wish to visit his parents' grave, which he hadn’t previously voiced, was ultimately fulfilled.
The director of the Home, Muhamed Musić, together with his wife Emsada and the director of Foundation Second, Belma Mujezinović, accompanied the boy to the cemetery. With a prayer and the silent presence of those who truly understand him, this eldest boy, who has two sisters and three brothers, had the chance to be near his loved ones, if only for a short while.
Foundation Second covered all the expenses of this excursion — transportation and lunch, amounting to 1,135 EUR. This trip was so much more than an ordinary outing. It was a day filled with emotion, history, learning, and a reminder that small things — like an unplanned detour — are sometimes the most important.
