After losing electricity and then water, five children and their single mother were forced to leave the apartment they had called home. The landlord evicted them due to unresolved property legal issues, leaving the family in complete uncertainty.
These children are orphans – they lost their father, and despite the challenging circumstances, their mother is doing everything she can to keep the family together and provide them with a safe childhood.
Thanks to the exceptional efforts of social worker Abida Pilav and the support of the mobile team from the Family and child support service of the Cantonal public institution Home for children without parental care, the family was urgently relocated to a new apartment. The new landlord was initially skeptical, but after thorough discussions and the efforts of the expert team, he agreed to rent the apartment to the mother with five children.
“Thanks to the quick response and understanding of the landlord, the family will not be homeless tonight. However, they still face uncertain days and numerous challenges. They need stable community support. Every family deserves to have basic living conditions, and this family is facing challenges that have threatened their very existence. Our mission is to help them overcome these challenges and secure their future,” said Abida Pilav, social worker from the Stari Grad Social Service.
Foundation Second immediately responded and paid the first rent of 80 EUR. However, the new apartment is heated exclusively with electricity, meaning the family will soon face high monthly bills they cannot cover on their own.
Additionally, the apartment lacks a stove and refrigerator — basic appliances necessary for dignified living with children. Foundation Second is trying to raise funds to purchase used appliances, which will cost around 330 EUR.
“Thanks to kind-hearted people, we were able to avoid the worst-case scenario. But this is just the beginning. This family still needs our help — to have warmth, food, and security,” said Belma Mujezinović, director of Foundation Second.
The family is at risk of separation, and they have been included in an intensive support program to ensure the children stay with their mother and continue to grow in a family environment. Without timely assistance, there is a real danger that the children will be removed from the family and placed in alternative care.
“In such situations, systemic and humanitarian help must work together. This mother is doing everything she can to keep her family together. Our goal is to help her do that,” emphasized Amina Pohara, head of the Family and child support service at the Cantonal public institution Home for children without parental care Sarajevo.
