During the past two months, representatives of the Foundation "Second" from Sarajevo paid a visit to 35 families in Eastern Bosnia that have one or two members with special needs and donated them food and hygiene packages.
Many of these families live on the edge of poverty in remote villages such as Kaoštice, Sadba, Živojevići, Korjenići, Osanica, Bogušići, Luke, Ilovača... They are barely surviving, yet they are happy with every visit, every smile and every understanding they get.
- To me, this is as big as a house - the mother of 32-year-old Nedžad from Goražde, who has special needs, commented on the received package.
Greatest fears
Parents of the "special children" usually bear the greatest burden of care as long as they are able to move around and use their hands. Thus, an 81-year-old father cooks and bakes bread for his "special" 45-year-old son Selvedin, but also for his 75-year-old wife, who is blind because of diabetes. He knows, like other parents, that after their death, children will probably end up in a nursery for people with special needs.
The parents of 41-year-old Admir, who is motionless and unable to speak, know this as well. Recently doctors implanted a catheter in the bladder of their son, and he will have to carry it for life.
- Our biggest fear is what will happen to him when we die? That's why we are asking God to take him just a day before us - his father whispered with a sigh, bowing his head and hiding tears in his eyes.
Sometimes their siblings take over the care. If they can and if there is room for one more in their home. Or if the landlord who rents an apartment or one floor of a house allows someone who is different and has special needs to use his property.
- Believe me, every time I pay the rent to the landlord, I am wondering what will he tell me. Will he be angry because my children were playing too loudly or that my sister, who has special needs, was not in the best mood - the brother of 40-year-old Kana told us emphasizing that he has been trying to get a "social apartment" from the municipality for years, but with no success.
Cooperation with the Association from Goražde
The Foundation "Second" has started operating last year and this is one of the first projects it launched in cooperation with the Association for People with Special Needs from Goražde.
- At the beginning of December, we received an appeal via e-mail to help their members whose income is insufficient for their basic needs. We immediately invited our friends through the social networks to join the fundraising. In two months, more than 3.000,00 KM was collected, which was used for buying 38 food and hygiene packages that were delivered to them personally along with other goods we received as donation - explained Belma Mujezinović, director of the Foundation "Second".
In total, there were over 40 individual donations in money for this purpose, and there were also donations in goods.
- Humanitarian engagement is very important to us in the "Insider" Agency and the "Little Ambassadors" Association. Reading the post that Belma (the director of the Foundation) published about her charity mission, but also seeing the pictures of the truly inhumane conditions in which some people live, encouraged us to humbly contribute to this fundraising and the Foundation "Second". I would like to thank the people like her who are showing us that we should be humane as much as possible - said Adnan Vlajčić, founder and director of the "Insider" Agency and one of the founders of the "Little Ambassadors" Association.
Even Emira Hodžić, the president of the Association for People with Special Needs in Goražde, did not hide her satisfaction with the charity activities. Sometimes, when she collects enough donations, she is organizing various workshops for her members.
- Although our cooperation has just started, I am very satisfied, as well as all the members of the Association. In a short time, we managed to visit all the families and members of the Association, to see how these people are living, what are their needs and priorities. When I run out of strength to fight for all of them, Allah sends someone to help. To each of you who participated in this charity with even the tiniest bit, may Allah bless you, reward you for all your good deeds, and what is most important, give health to you and your family - said Emira Hodžić, president of the Association for People with Special Needs in Goražde.
