Just a few days ago, we wrote about a single mother of two children, then pregnant, who was struggling in Sarajevo to maintain the most basic living conditions – electricity, heating, water, and the hope that her family would remain together. Today, we are continuing that story, but with a burden that no words can fully carry.

single mother lost her baby

The mother gave birth on January 6. The delivery went smoothly. The baby girl was born alive. However, shortly after birth, serious complications occurred. Despite the doctors’ efforts, the baby did not survive. After several days on life support, the baby girl passed away.

As the mother was informed, the cause of death was related to heart and lung complications.

This tragedy struck the mother at a moment when she was already at the very edge of endurance – emotionally, physically, and existentially. In a short period of time, she lost her child, as well as the fragile stability she had only just begun to build with the support of the community.

We remind readers that this is a single mother of two children, without a stable income, who was included in the program of the Family and Children Support Service within the Home for Children without Parental Care Sarajevo, due to an assessed risk of family separation and the possible placement of children into alternative care.

Thanks to donations, Foundation Second was able to respond to the family’s most urgent needs in the previous period: outstanding electricity bills were settled and two additional bills paid, firewood was provided, a wood-burning stove delivered, along with a refrigerator and basic food supplies. These actions created the minimum conditions for the children to remain with their mother.

Unfortunately, these funds have now been completely exhausted.

The mother is still facing a water debt of approximately 300 BAM, does not have a washing machine, and now also carries the weight of an irreparable loss. Under such circumstances, every administrative obligation, every bill, and every passing day becomes heavier than ever.

Foundation Second will continue to monitor the situation and remain with this family within its capacities. However, without additional support from the community, these basic needs cannot currently be fully met.

This text is not written as an appeal seeking pity. It is a testimony to a reality in which personal tragedy and existential struggle overlap, without pause and without relief. Sometimes help does not mean solving everything. Sometimes it simply means that someone is not completely alone while going through the hardest days.
