In a small and modest home in Sarajevo lives a single mother of two children, who is currently pregnant. Without a steady income and with very little support, her daily life has long been reduced to trying to provide her children with the basics: warmth, food, and the security of staying with their mother. Behind these quiet efforts lies constant uncertainty and the fear that a water debt could mean losing everything she is trying to protect.

Due to an assessed risk of family separation—that is, the possibility that the children could be removed and placed in an alternative care institution—the family has been included in the Family and Child Support Service programme at the Home for Children Without Parental Care Sarajevo. The aim of this programme is to provide continuous support and preserve the family unit, so that children can grow up in their own home whenever possible.
Thanks to the donations collected, Foundation Second was able over the past period to respond to the most urgent needs of this family. The electricity debt was settled and power was restored, after which two subsequent electricity bills were also paid to prevent another disconnection during the winter. At the end of the year, the family received firewood, thanks to a generous donation from the company Infobip, and a wood-burning stove was delivered to provide a more stable source of heating for the home.
As the family did not have even basic household appliances, a refrigerator was also provided, and on several occasions food supplies and essential items were donated at times when there was almost nothing in the house. All of these interventions were aimed at ensuring the minimum conditions for a dignified life—light, warmth, and a meal.

However, with these efforts the Foundation also reached its limit. After the last electricity bill was paid, all available funds were exhausted. Despite a public appeal, there was no response that would allow the assistance to continue.
Today, this mother is facing a water debt of around 150 EUR, which once again seriously threatens the stability of the household. In addition, the family is still in urgent need of a washing machine, as the mother washes all clothes by hand, further burdening an already overwhelming daily routine.
Foundation Second will, within its possibilities, continue to monitor the situation and stand by this family. However, without additional support from the community, further interventions are not possible at this time.
This text is not written as a simple appeal, but as a testimony to the limits of help when support is missing. Sometimes very little—a single paid bill or one washing machine—is enough to prevent far greater harm and to preserve what matters most: keeping the family together.
