While many spend May 1st resting, the Director of Foundation Second, Belma Mujezinović, chose to mark this Labour Day – by working the land.

At the Small Family Home in Ledići, a place that has for years brought together children without parental care, at-risk families and persons with disabilities, the planting of the first crops of the season has begun. The first to go into the ground – potatoes.
This symbolic beginning carries a special story. Belma received the seed potatoes from her neighbour Meho from Ledići, a man engaged in livestock breeding and agriculture, who has long been selflessly supporting activities in this mountain village. His potatoes, grown on land in Dugo Polje near Lukomir, are known for their quality and natural cultivation methods.

Planting potatoes was not just an agricultural task, but also a continuation of a broader idea – returning to nature, learning through work, and creating a space where children and young people can develop life skills. Through activities like these, the Small Family Home in Ledići becomes a place where patience, responsibility and the value of effort are learned.
"Here, we teach children that nothing valuable comes overnight – but that everything you plant, with effort and care, can grow," Mujezinović points out.
The plot where the planting began was recently cleared, ploughed and tilled with the help of neighbours and volunteers. Although there are still stones and uneven ground, this was not an obstacle to taking the first step.
In the coming weeks, the inclusion of other beneficiaries of Foundation Second’s programme is planned – especially children and persons with disabilities from partner organisations – who will have the opportunity to take part in planting, caring for the crops, and later, the harvest.
In this way, Ledići is not just a place of stay, but a space of creation, community and new beginnings.
