At a time when many families are preparing for Ramadan with a sense of anticipation and warmth, there are also those for whom this period brings additional worry. Fifteen families at risk of children being separated from their parents, who are included in the Family and Child Support Service programme, fight every day to preserve what matters most – their family unity. These families are under professional supervision and continuous support from the mobile team of the Home for Children without Parental Care Sarajevo, while field and humanitarian assistance is also provided by Foundation Second.

These are families facing severe economic hardship, unstable income and daily challenges that can lead to further deterioration of family stability. In such circumstances, even basic needs become a burden. An empty refrigerator often means a sleepless night for parents worrying about how to provide a meal for their children the next day. That is why food packages at this time are much more than food aid – they are support for keeping families together.
"When a family reaches the point where they lack basic food supplies, it is no longer just a material issue – it becomes a risk to the stability of the entire family. Our goal is to respond in time, to help children remain in their homes with their parents, and to provide support before the situation becomes even more difficult," emphasises Amina Pohara, Head of the Family and Child Support Service. She stresses that timely assistance is crucial, because it is in moments of greatest insecurity that families need to feel they are not alone.
Ramadan further intensifies the emotional burden on parents who want to give their children a sense of home warmth, a shared meal and dignity.
"These families are not asking for luxury, but for the basics – that children have a meal, that parents feel at least some relief, and that they can welcome Ramadan together without fear of tomorrow. A food package at this moment means peace at home, and that is the foundation of every healthy family," says Belma Mujezinović, Director of Foundation Second.
We now have the opportunity, as a community, to show what true solidarity means. One food package, worth 100 EUR, is tailored to the real needs of each family and provides several weeks of more secure meals for children already living in vulnerable conditions. Every donation – regardless of the amount – becomes part of a chain of kindness that brings relief to parents and a sense of safety and care to children.
