At first glance, they were just dry branches. However, at the Small Family Home in Ledići, we believe that nothing which can still be useful should end up as waste. Every object, every piece of wood, and every corner deserves a new purpose.
Over the past month, Foundation Second Director Belma Mujezinović and a team of volunteers have been working almost every day to improve the grounds of the Small Family Home in Ledići. The grass has been mowed, overgrown vegetation cleared, flower beds arranged, fruit trees, vegetables and herbs planted, and outdoor spaces prepared for children's play and activities, while everything that can be reused is being carefully preserved.
We are doing all of this so that, this summer, children from Bosnia and Herzegovina and across the region can enjoy a safe, beautiful, and welcoming environment, surrounded by nature and by people who care about every detail.
During these works, it was finally time to deal with the dry branches of our century-old apple tree.
At the end of last year, this valuable tree had to be pruned by an experienced arborist because it had been infested with mistletoe. Numerous dead branches were removed to preserve the apple tree, which has provided shade to the yard for decades and remains one of its most treasured symbols.
After the pruning, the branches were stacked for several months under a covered area in the yard of the Small Family Home, where they dried naturally and are now ready for a new purpose.
A few days ago, we finally decided to put them to good use.
Each branch was cut to the appropriate length, neatly stacked, and stored inside an old outdoor toilet that has long since lost its original purpose. Instead of becoming an abandoned space, it has now been transformed into a small firewood storage area that we hope will soon serve its intended purpose.
Our wish is to purchase a large barbecue with a traditional cooking dome (sač) for the Small Family Home in Ledići.
When that happens, these very branches will fuel the first fires around which children will gather. It will become a place for shared meals, the aroma of grilled vegetables, corn, fish or meat, conversations, laughter, and memories that children will carry with them long after leaving Ledići.
To some, this may seem like an ordinary task.
To us, it is not.
It is part of the philosophy on which we are building the Small Family Home. We want children to learn to respect nature, take care of the things they have, use resources responsibly, and understand that small actions, when combined, can create something truly beautiful.
Just as the former school building from 1922 was given a new life as the Small Family Home, the dry branches of the century-old apple tree will also receive a new purpose – warming future gatherings of children and helping create memories that will last a lifetime.
Because a home is not made of walls alone.
A home is made of people, togetherness, nature, and the care we invest in every single corner, every day.
