Foundation Second has successfully completed another important activity aimed at improving the safety and quality of stay for children at the Small Family Home in Ledići, thanks to the support of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Policy through a grant intended for the development and enhancement of non-institutional child care services.

The Small Family Home in Ledići is operated by Foundation Second in cooperation with the Canton Sarajevo Public Institution Home for Children Without Parental Care Sarajevo. The building, originally constructed in 1922 as a family house and later used as a school, was granted for use by the proBITRA Foundation to the Home for Children Without Parental Care Sarajevo for a period of 99 years. The house also holds significant historical and cultural value as a protected National Liberation War monument. It hosted one of the most important sessions of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia, chaired by Josip Broz Tito. Following the Second World War, the building served as a primary school from which the first engineer of this region graduated.

As part of the project, a complete replacement of the exterior doors was carried out on the building that today serves as a Small Family Home for rehabilitation, rest and support for children and families.

Extensive Renovation for a Safe and Comfortable Environment

Over the past several years, the building has undergone extensive renovation to become a safe and comfortable place for children and families. Although high-quality wooden doors had been installed a few years ago, the harsh weather conditions on Bjelašnica Mountain left visible damage. Severe winters, heavy snowfall, strong winds and sudden temperature changes caused deformation and deterioration of the wooden structure, preventing the doors from providing the level of protection required for the building's users.

Guided by the belief that children's safety must remain an absolute priority, the management of Foundation Second decided to replace all exterior doors and install custom-made security doors with additional protection adapted to the extreme weather conditions characteristic of the Ledići area. These high-quality doors were designed to withstand decades of exposure to snow, rain, wind and significant temperature fluctuations. Their lifespan is estimated to span several decades, making them a long-term solution for protecting both the building and its users.

A total of four exterior doors were replaced. Foundation Second financed the replacement of three doors, while the contractor donated the fourth door as its own contribution to the project. The value of one custom-made door set is approximately BAM 2,500, making this a significant investment in the safety and long-term protection of the facility.

The implementation of this activity began in December 2025 and was carried out in accordance with the available schedules and production capacities of the contractor. Since all doors were custom-made, it was necessary to coordinate the work schedule with the contractor's previously accepted commitments.

The project is further strengthened by the fact that the contractor is a long-term partner of Foundation Second, supporting humanitarian activities aimed at the most vulnerable groups in society. Over the years, the same contractor has produced doors for numerous families living in difficult social circumstances, helping make their homes safer, warmer and more functional. Once again, the company demonstrated its social responsibility by donating one complete door set for the Small Family Home in Ledići.

“From the very beginning of the development of the Small Family Home in Ledići, children's safety has been our absolute priority. The children who stay here deserve a safe, warm and protected environment regardless of weather conditions. The house is located in a mountainous area exposed to a very demanding climate, and it was important for us to secure a long-term solution that will protect both the children and the building in the years to come. Thanks to the support of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Policy, we were able to implement this important investment that will benefit generations of children who will visit Ledići in the future,” said the Director of Foundation Second.

The new doors represent much more than a construction improvement. They provide enhanced protection against burglary, better thermal insulation, greater resistance to moisture and severe weather conditions, and significantly improve the safety of children and all users of the home. Given the conditions on Bjelašnica Mountain, this investment will demonstrate its full value for years and even decades to come.

Thanks to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Policy

Foundation Second extends its gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Policy for its continuous support in developing non-institutional child care services. Through programmes such as this, it is possible to improve living conditions for children in care and develop modern support models that provide children with a safer, higher-quality and more humane environment in which to grow up.

Foundation Second also expresses special thanks to the contractor, a long-standing partner and friend of the Foundation, whose donation of one complete door set further contributed to improving the safety and quality of life for children in Ledići.

Today, the Small Family Home in Ledići serves as a place of rest, rehabilitation, education and family gatherings for children in care, families at risk of separation and other programme beneficiaries. Every new investment contributes to its long-term sustainability, and the new doors represent yet another step towards creating a safe and welcoming home for every child who passes through them.
