During the stay of a family of five at the Small Family Home in Ledići, the conditions were met to continue the insulation and furnishing works on the Mini Cat Barn, which will be located in the old barn in front of the main house. After a prolonged period of difficult access, the access road became passable, enabling the arrival of a truck and the delivery of the remaining construction materials. This finally created the conditions for the engaged craftsman to begin the planned works.
The stone mineral wool currently being installed represents the remaining part of a donation from Knauf Insulation, which the Small Family Home in Ledići received three years ago, at a time when Foundation Second was carrying out comprehensive insulation works on the main house, built back in 1922, where the Home is located today. This donation was also the first major material contribution to the project, opening the way for renovation, adaptation, and the creation of a safe, warm, and dignified space for the children and families who now stay in Ledići. Part of this material, preserved specifically for such needs, is now being given a new purpose.
In this process of preparatory and initial works, a special contribution was made by the father of the family currently staying in Ledići. Hard-working and accustomed to physical labour, he helped the craftsman carry all the necessary materials into the facility and then joined in the work itself. His wish was simple — to contribute to the shared space, especially since, as he says, he loves cats, a love shared by his wife and children.
While the works were underway, the children spent their days playing with the cats and enjoying winter activities — sledding, snow, and the freedom of the Ledići landscape filled them with laughter and carefreeness. During this same period, the kittens were also returned to Ledići after having been previously taken to a safe place to recover and complete the treatment prescribed by veterinarians at the City Vet clinic. Following their successful recovery, the kittens returned to their natural environment, once again becoming part of everyday life in Ledići — play, care, and togetherness.
At the same time, the Mini Cat Barn was gradually taking on a warmer and more functional form, creating safer and more comfortable shelter for the cats during the cold mountain days.
It is important to note that so far only one single donation in the amount of 15 EUR s been recorded for the Mini Cat Barn, while a total of 1250 EUR is required to complete all planned works. Most of what has been accomplished to date has been made possible through Foundation Second’s own funds, the support of people on the ground, volunteer efforts, and goodwill.
The stay of this family in Ledići is part of a programme that Foundation Second implements in cooperation with the Family and Children Support Service of the Home for Children without Parental Care Sarajevo, focused on preventing family separation and the institutionalisation of children. Through stays like this, families at risk are offered a temporary respite in a safe and supportive environment, while parental capacities, family relationships, and a sense of stability are strengthened. The goal of the programme is to preserve the family unit and create conditions in which children can grow up within their own families, supported by continuous professional and material assistance.
Moments like these — where a family’s stay, care for animals, and shared work naturally intertwine — best reflect the spirit of Ledići: a place where, even after many years, every good intention continues, grows, and finds new meaning.
