"I want to stay here for 20 years."
Said a seven-year-old boy after diving once again into a small plastic pool in Ledići – the kind that barely fits two children, so they gently push and giggle, taking turns.
He came with his sister and baby brother – a little one who still doesn’t walk. He had just started crawling.
It was his first time feeling grass under her hands, breathing in mountain air that doesn’t drip down damp apartment walls.
His four-year-old sister sat by the pool asking:
"Is it warm now? Can I go in?"
When she finally stepped in, she splashed the water with both hands and exclaimed:
"This is like the sea!"
But they’ve never seen the sea.
They live with their single mother, in conditions where every month is a fight for the basics.
They’re at risk of being separated – not because no one loves them, but because they don’t have enough.
Enough for tomorrow.
That’s why we brought them to Ledići. To be together. To be children. To have one day without worry.
To dive in the pool, roll around the grass with stuffed animals, and feed the cats that patiently follow them around.
To watch smoke rise from the barbecue as Mustafa, the housekeeper from the Bjelave Home, smiles while grilling ćevapi for everyone – saying:
"Eat up, kids. There’s more."
To sit in the shade after lunch, holding slices of cold watermelon, and say:
"This is the best day ever."
To give their mother – for the first time in a long time – a moment to sit down and simply watch. Without thinking about food, electricity bills, or the damp apartment.
To let them all be what they are: a family.
We bought a small pool because we couldn’t raise enough for a bigger one.
But the kids were overjoyed – and asked for more.
So we want to bring them back. And let them stay a little longer.
Not 20 years, like he wished – but at least a few more days.
Together.
