Even after the festive days of Eid have passed, kind-hearted people remain by the side of those who need support the most. The director of Foundation Second, Belma Mujezinović, and the head of the Family and child support service of the Cantonal public institution Home for children without parental care Sarajevo, Amina Pohara, recently visited a five-member family that has long been in the care of this service due to the risk of family separation and unresolved housing issues.

Foundation Second has been supporting this family for almost a year — providing food packages, clothing, furniture, firewood, and assistance during their most difficult times. And during this latest visit, representatives of the Foundation and the Home did not come empty-handed — essential groceries were purchased and donated so the family could mark the Eid holidays with dignity, despite their harsh everyday life.

The household, made up of parents and three underage children, spent ten years living in an uninhabitable, crumbling house until this spring, when, forced by circumstances, they had to leave the home marked for demolition. They managed to find a rented place in the neighborhood for 350 KM (approx. €175) a month. With the help of its donors, Foundation Second covered two months’ rent to help them settle into their new home. However, one of those rent payments had to be redirected to buy a bunk bed for the children's room, leaving them one month behind on rent.

Regardless of the difficult circumstances, the parents painted, cleaned, and lovingly decorated their home with small details they had saved over the years — little things gathered in the hope of one day having a space worthy of their children.

The mother, a hardworking and modest woman, earns extra income by cleaning apartments on-call. She is known in the neighborhood and among those who know her as a diligent worker whom people are happy to recommend to others. Together with her husband, the family survives on modest earnings from selling items they collect from waste sites, while the father occasionally finds daily work on construction sites.

Even amid their daily struggles, kindness was never forgotten — during one of her rounds, the mother rescued two newborn kittens and their mother from a crow attack and brought them home to care for them. The children immediately grew attached to the cats, and instead of spending time on phones and screens, they choose to play with and cuddle them. The cats are currently battling a fungal infection, so Foundation Second will provide them with better food and antifungal cream to help them recover as soon as possible.

The eldest daughter, a 15-year-old girl, is about to finish eighth grade with very good grades and dreams of enrolling in high school and continuing to university. Her perseverance and aspirations are, as Foundation Second director Belma Mujezinović says, proof that even in the most difficult conditions, the most beautiful stories of strength and love are born.

"This is a hardworking family doing the best they can, in the ways they know. Their home is filled with warmth, attention, and faith in better days. The children are humble and wonderfully raised, and the parents, despite life's hardships, strive to provide them with dignified living conditions. Our foundation will continue to support them and will try to find additional paid work opportunities so they can care for their children independently and avoid the possibility of separation," stated Belma Mujezinović.

Amina Pohara, head of the Family and child support service, emphasizes that the family has never asked for much and has always been grateful for any help received.

"They’re not people who ask — they are people who try. Every bit of support we provide is a step closer to a safer childhood for their children. This is a family that deserves a chance, and together with Fondacija Second, we’ll do everything we can to ensure they get it," said Amina Pohara.

Foundation Second invites all kind-hearted people who are able to help — whether through donating groceries, providing financial support for rent, or offering additional work opportunities for the parents.

Because in this home, where even the smallest piece of bread is shared from the heart, Eid and hope arrive together.
